Past and Future

On this page I summarize my biggest projects of the past (as of January 2022) and my career plans for the future.

past:

  • Introducing CDN (Akamai) to wetteronline.de
    • A CDN was a gamechanger for wetteronline.de. We were facing the challenge of a huge variaty of user requests per day and scaling and redundancy wasn’t a big thing in the early 2000s. I brought Akamai and WetterOnline together and for many years was responsible for configuring and maintaining the caching layer, offloading up to 90% of requests from our datacenter webservers.
  • 17 years of on call with my team
    • For 17 years my team and I ensured wetteronline.de to be online, one of the highest ivw ranked sites in Germany. Due to power losses and hardware/software issues we used to be offline a few times for a few hours but never for a day and in 17 years these incidents did not happen very often. Today with the power of the Cloud this is more easily archieved.
  • Leading the transition from bare metal to virtualization
    • Many years before the cloud era started for WetterOnline our first step was to transition from many racks of bare metal to VMWare virtualization, giving us more flexibility and significantly reducing our costs by getting rid of unused racks.
  • Introducing monitoring to my company
    • In 2007 I finished my second diploma (informatics) an in my practical thesis introduced Nagios to WetterOnline which (together with Zabbix that I also introduced) gave more insight into server- and application issues as well as performance.

future:

  • Transitioning infrastructure to code, using CloudFormation and/or Cloud Development Kit
  • Teaching Cloud to colleagues and clients
  • containerizing server environments (using either ECS or EKS)
  • Utilizing CICD for easier change management of coded infrastructure
  • Implementing event driven solutions for monitoring and compliance challenges leveraging AWS lambda/Step Functions
  • becoming AWS certified Solutions Architect Professional
  • Certification for AWS Security Specialty and DevOps Engineer Professional
